INSTALLATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please install the included font (called RIPstandard.font) to your FONTS
directory. It is not really necessary, as the program will use the topaz
font if it cannot find the RIPstandard font.
To start the program, Click on the RIPGRAF icon or type RIPGRAF in a CLI.
NOTE: THIS PROGRAM REQUIRES WB 2.04+ AND WILL NOT WORK ON ANYTHING LESS!
How to use the program
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Toolbar:
The heart of the program is the toolbar, so I will attempt to explain it,
in point form, gadget by gadget from left to right:
CLR - Clear the screen completely, all your work is erased.
UNDO - Available in the REGISTERED version only. This will UNDO
the last object added to the editing area, and continue
erasing objects until you are back to a blank screen.
DOTS - Pixel drawing. Click the mouse button (either one) and
a pixel will be drawn using the current drawing Color.
LINES- This has been changed since the last release, the arrow
pointing down indicates that there is a "sub-toolbar"
for this gadget. Click on it to display the line options.
BACK - Moves from the line options tools back to the
main toolbar. When you do this the Line-arrow
will still be highlighed and whatever line option
you chose will still be active
LINE - Normal lines. Click either button to start the
line and release. Move rubber-band line to the
ending position and click either button. The line
will then be drawn in the current drawing color,
thickness and (not yet)pattern.
CONTINUOUS - Connected lines. Click either button to start
the line and release. Move the rubber-band line to
the end of *THAT* segment and click the LEFT mouse
button to draw that segment in the current drawing
color, thickness and (not yet) pattern. The next
segment will now be started... and so on until you
draw as many connected lines as needed. Click the
RIGHT mouse button to stop drawing connected lines.
RAYS - Rays are lines which share a common starting point.
Click either button to start. This determines the
"center" or starting point that all lines will share.
Move the rubber-band to where you want it placed and
click the left mouse button, now you have a second
rubber-band line being drawn from the previous line's
starting point. When you no longer want to draw rays
click the RIGHT mouse button to finish the last ray.
BEZIER- Bezier curves are composed of two "anchor" and two
"hug" handles. To draw a curve, first click either
button to start a rubber-band line (the first anchor
point), and move to the end (the second anchor point)
and click the left mouse button. Now the initial
bezier curve will be drawn, along with the four
positioning "handles" (displayed as x's). To grab
a handle click near it (and release the button), now
move the handle and the curve will be changed. Click
the LEFT mouse button to drop the handle. Continue
picking up/dropping handles until the curve looks
like you want. Click the RIGHT mouse button to draw
the finished curve using the current drawing color,
thickness(not yet) and pattern(not yet).
SQUARES- This gadget selects the square (rectangles really) function
Depending on which part of the gadget you click in, you will
either get unfilled or filled squares. The gadget imagery
will change to reflect which type you selected. Click either
button to start a square and release the button. Move the
rubber-band square and click either button to draw the
finished square using the current drawing color, thickness
and (not yet) pattern for UNFILLED, and the current FILLING
color and FILL pattern for FILLED squares.
CIRCLES-This has been changed since the last release, the arrow
pointing down indicates that there is a "sub-toolbar"
for this gadget. Click on it to display the circle options.
BACK - Moves from the circle option tools back to the
main toolbar. When you do this the circle-arrow
will still be highlighed and whatever circle option
you chose will still be active
UNFILLED CIRCLE - Click either button to start, move the
rubber-band circle until you have the size you
want and click either mouse button to draw the
finished circle using the current drawing color,
thickness.
FILLED CIRCLE - Click either button to start, move the
rubber-band circle until you have the size you
want and click either mouse button to draw the
finished circle using the current drawing color,
thickness, with the interior filled using the
current filling color and fill pattern.
UNFILLED OVAL - Indentical in usage to UNFILLED CIRCLE,
except you can draw ovals.
FILLED OVAL - Indentical in usage to FILLED CIRCLE, except
you can draw ovals.
CIRCLE ARCS - Not supported in this release.
OVAL ARCS - Not supported in this release.
CIRCLE PIE SLICE - Not supported in this release.
OVAL PIE SLICE - Not supported in this release.
NOTE: The circle drawing routines *HAVE* been changed from
previous releases. This allows me to add support for
ARCS and PIES, as well the routine draws a little
faster than the graphics library routines.
POLYGONS- This gadget selects the polygon function. Depending on
which part of the gadget you click in, you will either get
unfilled or filled polygons. The gadget imagery will change
to reflect which type you selected. Click either button to
start drawing a polygon, and move the rubber-band line to
place the first segment of the polygon, and click to draw
that segment in the current color, thickness and (not yet)
pattern. A new rubber-band line will be started at the end
of the last segment, place it like you did the first and
continue. To end the polygon click the RIGHT mouse button,
and the polygon will be AUTOMATICALLY closed.
TEXT - Clicking on the Text gadget (the big A), will put you in
the text "adding" mode. To enter/place text, click somewhere
on the drawing area (it makes NO difference where, this
is done to tell the program you want to enter some text)
A text requester will now open. Enter the text in the string
gadget and hit return. Change the Font cycle gadget to the
font you wish to use and adjust the Font size slider to the
size you want. Click the Window Close gadget, and you will
now place the text string. The STANDARD font is an Amiga
bitmapped font and displays in real time as you place it,
all other 10 fonts are scalable fonts and use a placment
box. The scalable placement box has one line through the
middle (horizontally), this is the text baseline and the
space below it is where the descenders are drawn (like in
p and q). Click either button to finish the text placement,
and draw it using the current drawing color.
NOTE: The 10 scalable fonts were all designed at a font
size of 4, so this is the size they look best in. Some
fonts (like Small) are virtually unreadable at size 1.
The UNREGISTERED version only supports ONE scalable font,
so no matter which font you have the cycle gadget set to,
you will only get that one font. To see what your missing
out on view the "Fonts.pic" IFF file. (REGISTER and you can
use all those nice looking fonts)
FLOOD- Flood filling. Click either button at the point you want to
begin the fill, and the filling will use the current fill
color and pattern, with the boundary color set to the
current drawing color.
ICON- Icon placing. Depending on whether you had previously
loaded an icon, you will see a icon "box" showing the
exact size and location where the loaded icon would be
drawn. If you have no icon loaded, you will see nothing
(not even the pixel cursor). To load an icon you can
either click the right mouse button to access the ASL
file requester or double click on the icon gadget.
While you have an icon loaded (and the icon placement
box will be displayed) click the left mouse button
to draw the image of the loaded icon.
NOTE: If you REGISTER you will receive a program which
will convert an IFF file into an ICON (ICN file). I
did the BOING.ICN (included) using DeluxePaint and then
converted it to an ICON (the original IFF brush is
included as well).
BUTTON- Not functional yet. Soon (the next release) I will be
supporting mouse fields, which just define an area in
which a mouse click would "do" something. Button support
will come later. Buttons have special effects and imagery
you can use like a Mouse field (or just for non-usable
imagery)
LINE STYLE- This area of the toolbar selects the current line
thickness and pattern for line routines which support
them.
NOTE: The line pattern gadget (below the two thickness
gadgets) is not yet functional.
PATTERN - This area has the FILL pattern gadget in it. Click on
the gadget to cycle through all the possible patterns.
NOTE: Custom defined fills are possible with RIP, and I
will be adding a FILL editing requester to the program.
DRAW/FILL COLORS- This area has the palette, as well of the two
color gadgets, which determine whether the draw or fill
is changed to the color you select from the palette.
NOTE: RIP uses 16 colors out of a usable palette of 64
colors. RIPGRAF "knows" how to calculate those colors,
and if you using the REGISTERED version, it will change
the colors accordingly. A future version will add a color
requester to allow you to select which of the 64 colors
you wish to use. As well I will add support for reading/
matching an IFF palette to the 64 color RIP palette. (for
using the IFF2ICN program)
Menu:
The menu currently only has a "project" menu, but I hope to
add other stuff later. The menu options are straight forward,
and pretty much do what they say. ;-)

DISTRIBUTION
~~~~~~~~~~~~
This unregistered version of RIPGRAF may be freely distributed. However
it may not be included with any commercial program package without my prior
consent. Fred Fish (and other shareware venders) may distribute this
archive in any format they desire, provided they charge for the media and
compilation and not for the RIPGRAF program itself, making that fact plainly
clear to people using/purchasing the program compilations, that they have no
right to any registered version of RIPGRAF unless they have registered the
program with the author (Michael Nelson).
QUOTE (not very topical, but I like it)
~~~~~
"I took the liberty of examining that parrot, and I discovered that the
only reason that it had been sitting on it's perch in the first place
was that it had been nailed there."
